I Write!

Why do you write? Some people might be asking why they would have blogs, why they would write a book or other forms of publications. They would end up with various reasons. Some would say they write to make a living. Some might say they write to fulfill their passion. Some others might even write because of peer preassure or because they want to be popular. Even Barney writes his blog to be legen... wait for it ...dary! Legendary! I write simply because I want to. Not because I want people to read it and change their lives. Not to be legendary like Barney. Not because I want to make a living out of it. Not because I want to be famous. Not even to fulfill my passion. Just because I want to, as simple as that. I write whenever I feel like writing, wherever I can (laptop, paper, smartphone), and I write whatever comes through my head. Not some pre-researched topics I think people would love to read. Take this post as an example. I wrote this in a motor garage while getting my motorcycle h...

2011, A New Year Resolution?

Image
It's January 12, 2010 and I haven't made something I used to make from year to year, my new year resolution. I openned this year with a very happy gift. My son was born at the beginning of the year. Once more, our little family is very happy and all my focus are directed towards my children. Looking back in time, when I was in senior high, about 10 years ago, I set these long-term goals I wish to achieve in life. Some of which are: Get my master degree before 25.  I managed to finish my master degree on July 2008, the graduation was in November 2008, so basically I'm on the right track, going a few months faster. Target met. Get married at no more than 25. I managed to get married on December 2008, or approximately 2 months before I'm 25. So this one is also met nicely. Work for a company that is number 1 in the world in its field. Back in 2008, I worked for Deloitte 's Enterprise Risk Services Group. The ERS is the world leader in security and privacy. So, th...

Linux on Acer Aspire 4520 Install Guide

On The Transition To Linux I used to be a Windows user for as long as I can remember. But for the past 6 months I tried using linux, thx to my friend Gesang  and his provocative act influencing me to switch to linux.  Now I am using Backtrack 4 R1 (Ubuntu 8.10), a penetration testing distribution. I use the distro because I need the pentest capability to test the applications I created. So after about 6 months on Linux, I decided on switching my main O/S to Linux and leaving my Windows XP SP2 as an alernative. I don't know. Give me a couple of months and perhaps I'll run Windows on a VM. Now let,s get to the real point why I wrote this post in the first place. When I switched, the main problem was that most of the stuffs in my laptop is not all directly included in the distribution. Thus, I have to search all over the web for the required resources. This post will sum up where you'll have to download all the stuffs. Graphic Driver No, the graphic driver is no...

Expecting The Unexpected

Image
Surprised with my picture? Me too. For the first time in my life I have hoses going all over my body, yet I'm only 26 going 27 in 2 months time. Did I ever expect this? Never! I'm having some problems breathing and these hoses help me breathe. It's unpleasant and stressing to see yourself turning from a normal human being into a cyborg like creature (okay that one I was a bit exagerrating hehe). Still with this condition I can be thankful and learned some lessons. I thank God for creating the inventors of these machines helping me so I can still survive to see my beloved wife and child and hopefully our child to be born in a month's time. What did I learn? First lesson, pay it forward! Prepare yourself with contigency plans. Think of the worst that can happen to you and how you can reduce the risk incurred. I survived it to thr doctor last night because of this. I'm riding a motorcycle in a bad breathing condition but still able to survive because I prepared the sho...

Sebuah Renungan Untuk Hari Sumpah Pemuda

Falling Down & Getting Back Up

Image
One of my personal philosophies is: When you're up, reflect back to the times you're down. That should keep your feet in the ground.  I always picture back my struggling times back when I was still in university. Times when life was a lot harder and the world always seemed to come to an end for my life. Every day I woke up asking God if He would make the day easier than before. But then after I got my first job at a learning center, things started to improve. I graduated and took my master degree and things got even better. I moved to another company and got better positions. But then, the wheel starts it's down turn and my life started going down again. I got some problems at work and lose my job. But then I did not blame the world because I believe that things will take turn and this is my turn to hit the ground again. Also I thank God because now I can concentrate on my master studies. I started concentrating on Emfeld and got some projects to support my life. L...

Taking A New Step

Image
I finally installed Linux in my beloved Acer notebook. After almost 3 years running only on XP, yesterday I installed Backtrack 4 R1 to accommodate my needs in testing the security framework on my web applications. Using Linux is actually not a pain in the ass (just like what Microsoft lovers say). I like windows for its simplicity, graphical ability and the GAMES. But I like Linux for it's flexibility, python friendliness, virus free environment, and how it's speed plus stability in surfing the slowy (not speedy) Indonesian internet connection. Now, I have both running on dual boot in my laptop to meet all my needs. So, when you think you're satisfied enough with your windows, try switching for a while to Linux. Choose simple distros like ubuntu and you'll be amazed of what you can do. Regards -E- Follow @femmerling on twitter
